Institute of Meteorological Humanities in Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology


Institute of Meteorological  Humanities was founded in 2011 by College of Languages and Cultures, and it’s a new research platform which is based on meteorological characters of the university and aims to develop multidisciplinary.

The institute focused on “Meteorology and Humanity” and studies in fields of Meteorological Materials, Meteorological Literature and Meteorological Science and Technology History.

As for the research team, the institute has 5 professors, 12 vice professors, 8 lecturers, 18 Master’s tutors. Researchers have a wide range of discipline backgrounds, involving Ancient Literature, Modern and Contemporary Literature, Communication, Arts, History of Science and Technology, Bibliography, Information Science, History and Geography, which promotes the combination of multi-disciplinary.

In science researches, the institute has more than 20 projects including national Social Science Funds, Humanities and Social Science Funds from Education Department, Soft Science Objects from The China Meteorological Administration, Jiangsu Social Science Funds. During recent five years, the research teams published more than 10 CSSCI papers and more than 50 Chinese

In research facilities, the institute received central governmental grand and built 3 labs with more than 100 seats and an office for “Digital Center for Meteorological Materials”. For five years, the institute spent more than 6,000,000 Chinese dollars on discipline construction. An advanced database of meteorological materials has been built with advanced equipment, databases and teaching software. The institute purchased many historical document database, as well as a large number of magazines, paper books and digital materials.

In academic exchanges, the institute kept intimate touch with many first-class research institutes both abroad and at home over three years, such as University of Cambridge, University of Reading, Max Planck Institute fromGermany, Chinese Association for Science and Technology, China Research Institute for Science Popularization and Science Popularization Office of China Meteorological Administration. Besides, over 60 famous experts and scholars from universities and institutes over the world paid visits to and gave lectures in this university.

About popular science nonprofit activities, the center established cooperative relationships with many science and technology museums, primary schools and high schools such as China Meteorology History Museum in Nanjing Arctic Club, Meteorological Science and Technology Museum in Maanshan, Suqian High School, Affiliated Primary School to Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, The Second Foreign Languages School of Nanjing. All these have received widespread praise.
